Climate Action Data Trust
Simplifying complex carbon data through a unified platform
The Climate Action Data Trust (CAD Trust) is a decentralized platform that unifies carbon data from diverse registries, addressing the challenge of fragmentation to improve transparency and build trust in carbon markets.
As the lead designer, I spearheaded the user research, distilled dense datasets into intuitive dashboards, and collaborated with a development team to launch this platform from scratch.
The Approach
-
Discovery Interviews
I interviewed carbon analysts, policymakers, and traders, using a segmentation matrix to group users by their goals and pain points.
A key insight revealed users' need for an aggregated, high-level data view with customizable slicing and grouping. This drove the dashboard design, balancing an intuitive overview with advanced filtering options.
-
Prototyping
Designing the dashboard required careful consideration, with few existing references in the carbon registry space. A common issue in these references was their dense, data-heavy layouts, which we addressed by balancing sleek visuals with functionality.
The final dynamic, eye-catching dashboard resonated with users and aligned with stakeholders’ goals for impactful conference presentations, securing critical buy-in.
-
Usability Testing
We tested the prototype with domain experts to validate its functionality and ease of use. Key features, like a watchlist for project updates and a side-by-side comparison function, were prioritized based on user feedback, while less useful options, like grouped email notifications, were dropped.
Testing confirmed the platform’s clarity and relevance, helping us refine the final design for launch.
